SOP Director Randy Harwoodโs lessons in solar oven manufacturing continued with a recent visit to the ministryโs insulation workshop in Montrose, SD. The visit gave him a chance to get familiar with not only how the styrofoam sheets are cut into insulation strips for the solar oven box, but also how the black boxes are packaged for delivery to the main workshop in Raymond, SD.
Phil Lint, manager of SOPโs insulation workshop in Montrose, SD, walks SOP Director Randy Harwood through the steps of cutting styrofoam insulation for the solar ovens using a laser light to guide the cuts. The insulation helps keep the heat from the sun inside the finished solar oven while it cooks.Under the guidance of SOP volunteer Larry Zimmer, Randy learns the steps of marking up styrofoam insulation sheets before they move to the cutting stage. While Randy learned the fine art of cutting insulation foam, Montrose UMC members Connie Zimmer and Bill Smith use a metal template to mark up sheets of styrofoam with lines to help cut the foam accurately.
