Thinking about sharing the good news of solar cooking at one of SOP’s mission locations–or supporting a Volunteer in Mission?
Here are a few pointers from the Rev. Tammy Kuntz, coordinator of the North Central Jurisdiction of UMVIM and Gloria Borgman, SOP Advisory Board member, SOP VIM, and long-time team leader for medical mission trips to Honduras.
- You’ll be in good hands. Trained team leaders have the experience necessary to manage all aspects of the mission journey.
- SOP Mission team members support themselves financially. That can include personal investment, fundraising at church and/or community organizations, or scholarships.
- Get excited about learning. Research the culture and history of where you’ll be serving. Talk to another volunteer who has served there.
- Be flexible. The team’s best made plans can, and probably will, change on the ground. Those changes can provide the most meaningful experiences.
Support a volunteer
“Every mission team needs everyone–the Players, the Pray-ers, and Payers,” says Kuntz.
Players volunteer time and energy to be part of the team. Pray-ers pray before, during, and after the mission journey. Payers support the team and the project financially.
Local churches that sponsor a volunteer provide a pathway for sharing the story. The volunteer can share daily via email or social media, and prepare to share with the church or organization when they return. “Every member of a local church is part of the team,” adds Kuntz. “Consider how you might serve.”
